"The gifts of philanthropy: how corporations started giving back, again" by Shelley Thomas in High Ground News
Memphis has its share of great organizations and initiatives raising the bar of social responsibility. There is an abundance of opportunity for individual donors, organizations, and giving circles. Donors increasingly want to be more involved in the evaluation and allocation processes, and expect and anticipate social impact and change. The Lipscomb Pitts Breakfast Club, Community Foundation for a Greater Memphis’ GiVE 365, and the Assisi Foundation's classes such as “Before you Serve” and “Before you Ask,” are just a few examples of organizations and initiatives working to satisfy donors' need to be more deeply involved. "The Rant" (August 14, 2014) by Tim Sampson in The Memphis Flyer
Wow. Wow. Wow. While reading the latest newsletter from the Lipscomb and Pitts Breakfast Club (see, I'm not a hippie communist ALL of the time, and I enjoy that newsletter, and the LPBC folks do some really great things, like getting new socks and shoes for a ton of kids whose families couldn't afford them to help get them ready for school), I just learned about a company in Memphis I'd never heard of, and I am feeling like a little slice of heaven just landed in my lap. "Live from the LPBC Radio Show" by Alexandra Samsell with Volunteer Odyssey
Day 1. I feel like there should be some sort of dramatic “Law and Order” music playing right now. This morning I shadowed Jeremy Park – an important mover and shaker you should know if you don’t already. He is the vice president of communications for Lipscomb & Pitts Insurance, a member of its LLC, president of the Lipscomb Pitts Breakfast Club and hosts both the LPBC Radio Show (Saturdays 1-2 p.m. on News Radio 600 WREC) and television show, “The Spark” (the third Thursday of each month at 9 p.m. on WKNO-TV). Additionally, Jeremy writes the “Giving Back” column that appears each Sunday in The Commercial Appeal. The LPBC is an organization which hosts more than 150 free events throughout the course of the year to bring businesses together through community engagement. "Sunny Side Up" by Dan Conaway in the Memphis Daily News
WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST? I’m skeptical of city pep rallies because they tend to be more about the pep than any solutions worth rallying around, the cheerleading more cheering than leading. I’m also skeptical of anyone who’s particularly peppy first thing in the morning. More
