Much of Vaco’s activism has a side effect of helping to attract young professionals to Memphis and retain the city’s talent. But at the heart of the company’s activism is a simple desire to serve.

Rodney, a graduate of the New Leaders program and winner of the 2015 Spark Award in Education-Leadership, went on to complete his education and then devote his life, career and ministry to educating others. Always, in the back of his mind, he held onto that memory of growing up near Cherokee. Getting a chance to lead its turnaround, in fact, was his dream job – one he obtained in 2014.

Memphis Organizations Give Hope to Homeless

On any given night there are nearly 160 homeless families in Memphis sleeping in shelters or uninhabitable buildings. That doesn’t count the couples with young children or single moms with teenaged sons who sleep in cars, hospital waiting rooms, a friend’s home or just couch surfing night after night. Homeless families struggle to stay together. GOODworks journalist Lance Wiedower dives into the state of homelessness in Memphis.
